Excerpt from Pioneer Story

Daniel Rapalyea Allen operated flour mills in Flushing, New York, St. Louis, Kanesville and Perryville, Iowa, West Jordan, American Fork Canyon along with a saw mill, and American Fork City (600 North 150 East, just south of current Star Mill). The mills in the latter two locations were owned by him. Following several floods which destroyed the canyon mills and associated bridges, he returned to West Jordan.

Daniel Rapalyea Allen
Born: 2 August 1816, Newtown, Long Island, New York.
Died: 23 January 1873, Salt Lake City.
Daniel Rapalyea (or Rapyelle) Allen was born 2 August 1816, son of Robert Allen (born, 22 May 1784, Oyster Bay, Nassau, Queens, New York; died 8 August 1835, Hempstead, Queens, New York) and Letta Whaley (born 1790, Queens, New York; died, 4 February 1849, Jamaica, Queens, New York), at Newtown, Long Island, New York.
Married (1) Eliza Martin (born 11 May 1823, Brooklyn, New York; died 25 September 1901, West Jordan, Salt Lake, Utah) on 21 January 1837 at Jamaica, Queens, New York.
Paid for passage aboard ship Brooklyn for San Francisco, but decided to travel overland instead. Left New York City, 1 April 1847, for St. Louis. Remained in St. Louis for 3 years and operated a flour mill, employing a number of Utah immigrants. Operated flour mills at Kanesville, then at Perryville, Iowa, between 1850 and 1853. Joined the Daniel H. Miller wagon company which left Council Bluffs 5 June 1853. Arrived at Salt Lake City, 9 September 1853. Settled at West Jordan, where he operated a flour mill for Archibald Gardner.

Daniel Rapalyea Allen operated flour mills in Flushing, New York, St. Louis, Kanesville and Perryville, Iowa, West Jordan, American Fork Canyon along with a saw mill, and American Fork City (600 North 150 East, just south of current Star Mill). The mills in the latter two locations were owned by him. Following several floods which destroyed the canyon mills and associated bridges, he returned to West Jordan. After a brief stay at the Gardner mill, he operated Brigham Young's Big Cottonwood mill (Midvale) and Lower Mill near 1300 South 700 East (Liberty Park) in Salt Lake City.
Daniel died at the Lower Mill home on 23 January 1873 of small pox. He was buried at Wight's Fort (West Jordan), Salt Lake County.
